FAMILY HISTORY AND RECORD KEEPING
Good morning, dearly Beloved,
With great excitement in my heart, i
welcome you to the Family Altar Daily Devotional Guide of The Presbyterian Church of Nigeria.
TODAY WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 22ND, 2025
TOPIC: FAMILY HISTORY AND RECORD KEEPING
BIBLE PASSAGE: 1 CHRONICLES 9:35-44
Key Verse: “Mikloth was the father of Shimeam. They, too, lived near their relatives in Jerusalem” – 1 Chronicles 9:38.
The genealogy of Saul is the focus of today’s passage. It is to emphasize the fact that God did not wipe out his lineage. His descendants lived to the days of Ezra and the return from exile. The genealogy continues for twelve generations after him. The fact that his dynasty ended and his kingship was transferred to David did not remove his family’s place in Israel’s history. It is significant that the divine record still noted his generation long after he was gone.
Knowing our historical background can help us develop a strong sense of who we really are. Whether as a church, family, or individual, our history (even if negative) can serve as a lesson for others. The records we keep can be a source of inspiration for many who may be able to serve God better because of our legacy.
Do you know your family’s history? Do you keep records about yourself and your immediate family? In as much as heaven is our home, believers should not be earthly useless; God still has a purpose for keeping you on earth even after you become born again. For example, your family history can unearth a certain evil pattern of sickness, death, or calamity affecting generations, which will require you to stop it through prayers, medical science, and deliverance from ancestral curses Daniel would not have known about God’s promise to deliver Jerusalem from desolation after 70 years if he did not read it from historical records (Daniel 9:1-3; c/f Jer. 25:11-12).
Many Missionaries of old wrote journals were kept records of their experiences, which gave us adequate information about their daily spiritual and physical discipline. The Almighty God who helped them to live the way they did will also help us to keep good records of our walk with Him.
ACTION:
Endeavor to keep a good family history as you live daily. Form the good habit of keeping diaries, whether digital or manual, and take note of significant events in your life and that of your family.
PRAYER:
Ask the Lord to clean your family history and reestablish you.
